We certainly were not let down.

The workshop was great fun.  Everyone listened to instructions and got on  with the task set them.  As Mary and I circled the room looking over shoulders we could the beginnings of some very interesting blogs.  You’ll find a list of the bloggers in the left hand sidebar and underneath a feed to what they have written.

]]> http://empoweringvoicesonline.org.uk/2010/01/dewsbury-workshop-6th-february-fully-subscribed/feed/ 0 Prevent09 Conference http://empoweringvoicesonline.org.uk/2009/12/prevent09-conference/ http://empoweringvoicesonline.org.uk/2009/12/prevent09-conference/#comments Mon, 14 Dec 2009 14:53:15 +0000 ShaneMcC http://empoweringvoicesonline.org.uk/?p=34 We were at the Prevent 09 conference last Tuesday to help drum up support for this project from people working on preventing violent extremism.  We ran a couple of workshops where we explained the programme and answered questions on a wide range of issues internet related.  From tackling gangs in London to engaging with young people in the North there was a deep interest in what difference websites and blogs particularly could make.  Hopefully we’ll be following up these discussions early in the new year.

Before the workshops started I was able to listen to John Denham, Communities Secretary, give us keynote speech.  In it he addressed some of the criticisms that the Prevent project has attracted.  Two phrases stuck in my mind:

“It is a crime prevention programme.”

“We must have complete openness and transparency.”

It is easy to make things complex.  Particularly when they deal with complex issues.  I liked Denham’s simplicity in his first phrase and the second is the starting point for building trust.

The programme starts 9am and we’ll finish at 3pm.  More detail can be found below.

During the workshop participants will write and publish at least one post and will receive professional feedback from our online coach.  They will also learn to set up blogs and websites, and will explore the opportunities offered by a broad range of social networking websites.

The initial workshop is just the beginning. Afterwards, support will continue to be available from the online coach and through further workshops.
